WHERE ARE YOU?
I have been asked more than once why my own business is not on social media. After all, I offer marketing and PR services to businesses, and that often entails social media management. So why wouldn’t I follow my own recommendations and launch a social media strategy? It’s a fair question.
The answer is a question of philosophy.
My professional philosophy has always been that if I do my job well, it should not appear to the public and/or customers that I’m involved. My work should appear to be the work of the organization. In other words, it’s my job to make my clients look good- not my own business. Period.
I am ridiculously proud of the work my firm produces, and much of it includes compelling, gorgeous visuals that are deeply rooted in sound strategy. However, if I were to roll that out on my own feeds, it would become known that my team produced the work. It would also become known that my client called in reinforcements- optics that can cause their own perceptions. And in the end, that has the possibility of backfiring on the client. It’s not a risk I’m willing to take.
So, my philosophy is to remain far under the radar. But, if you see a business or organization in this general region that is producing strategic, thoughtful, and impactful marketing and public relations efforts, there may or may not be a possibility that I’m involved. But I’ll never tell.
